Tras siete años apartado del foco mediático, el exalcalde de Oviedo y exdelegado del Gobierno, Gabino de Lorenzo, ha concedido una entrevista a La Nueva España con motivo de la publicación de su libro fotográfico Oviedo, del blanco y negro al color. En un encuentro que se prolongó durante cuatro horas en un céntrico restaurante ovetense, De Lorenzo repasó su trayectoria política y recordó algunos de los episodios más destacados de su etapa como regidor. Uno de los puntos más llamativos de la conversación fue su reconocimiento de un error en la gestión del Real Oviedo: «Lo del Oviedo fue un error, lo reconozco; no esperé 15 días a ver una solución», señaló el exalcalde en la entrevista. Aunque evitó profundizar en la actualidad política, sí destacó los cambios que, a su juicio, transformaron la ciudad durante su mandato.
«En 1988 Oviedo era divina para entrar a transformarla», afirmó De Lorenzo, recordando el estado de la ciudad cuando accedió al gobierno municipal. Durante la entrevista, repasó algunas de sus políticas urbanísticas, culturales y de infraestructuras, como la peatonalización del centro o la creación del Auditorio Príncipe Felipe. «Había que ‘ximielgar’ Oviedo», expresó con su característico estilo directo. El exalcalde también mencionó las dificultades que enfrentó al llevar a cabo sus proyectos: «Cualquier cosa que hagas o pretendas hacer siempre va a salir un grupo en contra», declaró. No obstante, defendió que su prioridad fue siempre mejorar la ciudad en su conjunto, sin distinción entre barrios y centro.
A sus 82 años, De Lorenzo afirma que prefiere centrarse en el pasado y evitar las disputas políticas actuales. Su libro, según explicó, busca ser un testimonio visual de la evolución de Oviedo durante las últimas décadas, dejando a un lado las polémicas que marcaron su carrera política. «Cuando dejé la alcaldía, estaba todo hecho para veinte años o casi», cuenta con cierto orgullo el que fuera durante dos décadas alcalde de la ciudad que le vio nacer.
